Important New Residential Customer Information

BFI will provide you with the very best trash collection service at your residence. To help us do so and to help keep the City of Goleta and County of Santa Barbara beautiful, please take moment to read these tips about our service.

Many of these guidelines are established by local ordinance, setting certain responsibilities with BFI and others with the customer. Generally, these tips will help prevent injury to your collector or damage to the environment. If we may be of further assistance, please call or e-mail our CUSTOMER SERVICE DEPARTMENT at the numbers above.

Thank you for your business and for taking time to review these service guidelines.

SEE YOU ON COLLECTION DAY!
  • BFI collects the trash and yard waste on the same day of the week. We will pick up the total number of containers you subscribed for at your residence. The cans must be within 100 feet from the curb. If you plan on having your cans outside this range, please notify BFI and a distance charge will then be assessed to your account.
  • Recycling will be picked up EVERY OTHER WEEK on your trash and yard waste collection day. Because of new automated collection system, we require all wheeled carts to be placed in the street with the Wheels up against the curb. You must leave the carts at least two feet from parked cars or other carts if you have more than one cart. This is so that we may service the carts in a SAFE and efficient manner. Recycle carts must be placed on street for service the night before. *Please do not place carts in front of mailboxes. For information on your recycling pickup days, please check the recycling schedule.
  • BFI provides the customer with can(s) or wheeled cart(s) for yard waste and a wheeled cart for recyclable materials (containers for yard waste and commingled recyclables must be used exclusively for those items-any containers contaminated with items that are not recyclable will not be collected). These containers are property of BFI and must remain at the residence if the customer discontinues service.
  • Containers for household trash are provided by the customer. Containers may be made of plastic, metal, or rubber with a maximum 32-gallon capacity. Handles and lids are required. Call us if you wish to substitute a trash bag or a bundle of yard trimmings instead of a regular can. A bundle should be tied, should not exceed for feet in length and the collector must be able to lift it with one hand.
  • If you ever have extra trash, please call us. For a nominal fee, we will have your collector take up to four extra bags or cans on the next pickup. Please do not place bags or other items on top of cans. Our collectors are instructed not to take them in order to avoid discarding something you did not intend to throw away. Also, do nor store valued items (i.e., earthquake kits, toys) in garbage can unless you clearly marked the can “Not Trash”. (Please call at least one day in advance.)
  • No container should weigh over 60 pounds.
  • Help us keep your neighborhood clean. Sweeping residue, sawdust, ashes, pet litter, Styrofoam pellets, etc. will blow when the can is inverted for emptying by the collector. Help protect his eyes and avoid littering by wrapping or bagging such items before you put them in the trash container.
  • If you ever have loose glass in your container (even in bag), please leave a large note taped to the can. Cuts are the most common injuries to our collectors.
  • This service does not include concrete, drywall, or other demolition-type materials. Please call us if you need to dispose of these.
  • Please keep the collection area clean and free of trash on ground. Also insure that the cans are not blocked by a car or other obstacle. To avoid damaging a vehicle, we may not be able to service the can(s).
  • Dogs and other outside pets must be considered on collection day. If our collector is entering your backyard, he cannot be responsible for loose pet. We suggest putting the cans on the outside of the gate.
  • Please don’t overstuff cans. Contents should not protrude over the rim and should fall out freely when the collector inverts the can. Also, please don’t leave long poles or other objects protruding from the top of a can. Our collectors often work in the dark and have sustained serious eye injuries from such objects.
  • To change or stop your service please call our Customer Service Department, Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM, Saturday 8AM to 3PM. When you move out don’t rely on the next resident to change the billing… you are responsible for it until you notify BFI.
  • Lastly, please do not put paint, oil, or other hazardous materials in the trash. Watch your billing statements for special notices about how and when to dispose of such items.

HOLIDAYS
BFI observes six holidays per year. Our crews do not work on:

  • New Year’s Day
